The Sun Will Never Set in The Islamic State
Mention of the Khilafah ruling system (i.e. the Islamic state) in the past few decades has evoked some strange reactions. Some have seen the “Khilafah al-Rashida” as either a fictional or a romantic story. They see the period of Khilafah under Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali (ra) as a utopian ideal, the likes of which we will never see again. Many see the period of Khilafah after that with the hollywood-type images of flying carpets, hareems, gluttonous sultans and ravaging armies. The stark fact is that the Khilafah was a reality, for 1342 years, whose presence was felt by the entire world. The reality is that the Khilafah has existed and, with the help of Allah (swt) and our resolve in the work to return to it, it will exist again.
Indeed, the Islamic state was a tangible reality under which people lived and thrived for more than thirteen centuries. It was by no means a figment of imagination. Peoples and nations lived under its wing in dignity and security. The State went through various phases and ruled over many peoples before it was destroyed by the colonialists seventy years ago, on 3 March 1924. From that time it ceased to exist. Since then, the kaffir colonial powers (especially Britain and France), through their relentless lies and propaganda, have tried to erase it entirely from our memories. This approach led to some so called intellectuals becoming convinced that the era of the Islamic Khilafah is a thing of the past and that the return to Islam would be a backward move – “going back to the camel” became a repeated slogan. They echoed for their western friends by claiming that we now live the era of progress and revival – things which are not compatible with the Khilafah. We therefore took the bait and began talking about the Khilafah as being merely part of our former glories. Some wept over its loss without moving a finger to bring it back to the world stage because they saw it as part of a glorious history but an anachronism in today’s fast moving, space age environment.
The evidences about the establishment of Khilafat again, from the Qur’an and the Sunnah are numerous.
Evidences from the Qur’an
As for the evidences from the Qur’an: Allah (SWT) says:
[9:33] “It is He Who has sent His Messenger with the Guidance and the deen of Truth to dominate over all other deens even though the disbelievers detest it”.
This holy verse informs us that insh’Allah the future belongs to Islam, for it will dominate and rule over all other deens and peoples. Some of us may think that this has actually been achieved in the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and that of the Khulafah’ after him. This is not the case. For what has actually been achieved is only a part of this true promise. Another evidence is reflected in Allah’s (SWT) saying:
[An-Noor – 55] “Allah has promised, those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He will, indeed, grant them inheritance of power in the earth, as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their deen, which He has chosen for them, and that He will change their state, after the fear in which they lived in, to one of security and peace. They will worship Me alone and not associate anything with Me, and those who do reject the Faith after this, they would be the rebellious and the wicked.”
This generous verse represents the promise of Allah (SWT) to bestow power and establish in authority those from the Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH) who have believed and performed good deeds. This would be anytime and anywhere, and not specifically in the time of the Sahaba, as some may assume.
Imam Abdullah Al-Qurtubi wrote in his book entitled Al-Jami’i Li Ahkam Al-Qur’an in commentary about this verse the following: “It is safely correct to say that the verse applies to the Ummah of Muhammad in general, for the specification does not take place unless the conveyor (i.e. the prophet) informs us about it; and what is known to be the rule, is to always adhere to the generality.”
Imam Al-Shawkani wrote about this verse in his book entitled Fath-ul-Qadeer chapter 4 page 74, the following: “This is a promise from Allah (SWT) to those who believed in Allah and performed good deeds, that He will grant them authority over the whole world, as He did grant it to former nations. This promise applies to the whole of the Ummah, it has been claimed that the promise was specific to the Sahaba, but there is no proof to substantiate such a claim, for the belief and the performing of good deeds is not restricted among the Sahaba, but open to every individual from among the Ummah.”
Evidences from the Sunnah
As for the evidence from the Sunnah, several Ahadith have been reported, outlining the extent to which the dominance, the spread and the might of this deen will stretch. These sayings of the last Messenger to humanity, Muhammad (SAW), leave no room for doubt that the future belongs to Islam, insh’Allah.
Imam Ahmad extracted on the authority of Al-Nu’man Ibnu Bashir (R) who said: We were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and Bashir was a man who used to follow his Hadith (PBUH). Then Abu Tha’alaba Al-Khashni came and said: O Bashir, do you recall the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) about the Amirs? Upon this Huthayfa said: I do recall his speech. So Abu Tha’alaba sat down and then Huthayfa said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: The prophecy will remain among you for as long as Allah wills, then Allah will lift it when He wishes to, then it will be a Khilafah Rashida (rightly guided) on the method of the prophecy, it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then Allah will lift it if He wishes, then it will be a hereditary leadership which will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will lift it if he wishes, then it will be a tyrannic rule, and it will remain so for as long as Allah wills, then He will lift it if He wishes, then it will be a Khilafah Rashida on the method of the prophecy, then he kept silent. (Musnad of Imam Ahmad 4/273).
In the book of Ibnu Asakir entitled the “Great history of Damascus”, Yunis Ibnu Maysara Ibnu Halbas is reported to have said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: This rule (i.e. the Khilafah) will be after me in Madina, then in Al-Sham, then in the peninsula, then in Iraq, then in Madina, then in Bayt Al-Maqdis (Al-Quds), and when the rule is established in Al-Quds, that would be its place, and thereafter nobody will be able to remove it.
In the book entitled Kinz-ul-Ummal 14/252, it is reported that Abu Umayra Al-Mazani said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: There will be a Baya’a of guidance in Bayt Al-Maqdis.
Ahmad in his Musnad (5/288), Abu Dawood in his Sunan No 2535 and Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak extracted the following Hadith: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: When the Khilafah comes to the holy land, this would mean that the earthquakes, the calamities and the major events are imminent, and that the Hour will then be nearer to people than my hand is to your head.
An-Nawawi in his book entitled Sharhu (explanation of) Muslim (18/38-39) and in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad 3/317 the following Hadith was reported on the authority of Jabir: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Among the last generation of my Ummah, there will be a Khaleefah who will scatter the money without counting it. In another report the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: When the end of the world is near, there will be a Khaleefah who would divide the money without counting it.
In the Sahih Bukhari, (the book of Al-I’tisam, chapter 10), and in the book of An-Nawawi (Sharhu Muslim 193/2) the following Hadith was reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: There will always be a group of my Ummah, who will fight for the truth and who will be prominent till the day of Judgement.
The following Hadith was extracted by Muslim in his Sahih according to Sharhu An-Nawawi (chapter 18 page 13), Abu Dawood in his Sunan (Hadith 4252), Al-Tirmithi chapter 2 page 27), Ibnu Maja (2952) and Ahmad’s Musnad (chapter 5 pages 278 & 284) and Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak (4/479), on the authority of Thawban: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Verily Allah has cornered (i.e. gathered together) the earth for me, so I saw its eastern and its western parts. And verily the authority of my Ummah will reach the parts of the earth which have been shown to me.
In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad 2/176, and that of Al-Darimi (chapter 1 page 126), and in Al-Mustadrak of Al-Hakim (3/422) the following Hadith was extracted on the authority of Abu Qabil who said: “We were at Abdullah Ibnu Amr Ibnul A’as, and he was asked: Which of the two cities would be conquered first, Constantinople or Rome? So Abdullah asked for a box to be brought, and from it he took out a book and then said: We were once gathered around the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) writing, and he (PBUH) was asked: Which of the two cities would be conquered first, Constantinople or Rome? The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) replied: The city of Heraclius will be conquered first (meaning Constantinople)”.
The first conquest mentioned in the Hadith has already been achieved, i.e the conquest of Constantinople, under the leadership of the Ottoman Caliph Muhammad Al-Fatih.
